[...] In the following Translation, I have been obliged to be slavishly literal; for the Criticisms often depending on a Word as well as the Thought, both must be preserv'd, or the Criticism's lost; and it has not been a little hard, where Pere Bouhours quotes Passages for their Nonsense, to preserve even the Spirit of the Nonsense, if I may say so, in the Translation, and much less the Spirit of all the various Kinds of fine Thinking".
