Modernizing Germany

Karl Biedermann's Career in the Kingdom of Saxony, 1835-1901.

This study uses the Liberal Biedermann as a focal point of some fifty years of Saxon and German history, looking at the history of the Reichsgründungszeit from the perspective of a small state whose government by no means shared Biedermann's political vision, but which showed considerable skill in meeting the challenges of industrialization, tariff union and political accommodation with the bourgeoisie.
