A Companion to Greek and Roman Historiography

A Companion to Greek and Roman Historiography

Edited by John Marincola. In 57 contributions this volume reflects the new directions and interpretations that have arisen in the field of classical historiography in the past few decades. Part I (Contexts) treats some of the larger issues involved in the study of the Greek and Roman historians, and seeks to situate classical historiography in the contexts of the societies that produced them and the generic traditions that developed over many centuries. Part II (Surveys) presents surveys of the major genres, while in Part III (Readings) contributors examine individual episodes or themes while simultaneously trying to draw some larger conclusions about what such analyses tell us of the interests and aims of the writers involved. Part IV (Neighbors) deals with genres that bordered on and influenced ancient historians, while Part V (Transition) looks at the continuity and change that accompanied the movement to the medieval world. - The volume comprises a series of cutting edge articles written by recognised scholars, and presents broad, chronological treatments of important issues in the writing of history and antiquity. These are complemented by chapters on individual genres and sub-genres from the fifth century B.C.E. to the fourth century C.E.. The Companion provides a series of interpretative readings on the individual historians, and also contains essays on the neighbouring genres of tragedy, biography, and epic, among others, and their relationship to history.
