Whom Wind & Waves Obey

[Vídalín, Jón]: Whom Wind & Waves Obey

Selected Sermons of Bishop Jón Vídalín. Translated into English with an Introduction by Michael Fell. This volume introduces English-speaking readers to one of the major literary productions of post-Reformation Iceland - the sermons of Jón Vídalín, Lutheran bishop in Iceland from 1698 to 1720, and the greatest of Icelandic preachers. The introduction traces the beginning and history of Icelandic Christianity, illuminates the life and times of the bishop as well as the contents of his preaching, and briefly mentions religious trends in Iceland since his death. It is then followed by translations of 23 sermons, which were originally written by the bishop for home devotional reading and which can all be identified by the particular Sunday or holy day on which they were intended to be read. His sermons are literary gems, and were vital formative influences on the Christian life of his people during the disaster-ridden eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
