This volume is the result of an eponymous international conference held at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt in June 2011. Its twelve articles focus on the cultural significance of established categories, such as 'nation' or 'region', which have faced new interpretations and evaluations in the course of the European integration process. Topics include: different ideas of 'European identity', reflections on the ambivalence of multiculturalism, the influence of language prestige on multilingual identity, apsects of the legal framework for multilingualism in the EU, a critical review of the European migration system, problems inherent in the Scottish claim for political independence within Europe, reflections on twentieth-century German youth movements, an analysis of the situation of Polish seasonal workers in Germany and its impact on identity formation, as well as literary reflections on the problem of cultural identities in the works of Joseph Roth, Victor Pelevin, and E.M.
