History and Bibliography of Artistic Anatomy

Röhrl, Boris: History and Bibliography of Artistic Anatomy

Didactics for depicting the human figure. Part 1: History. Part 2: Bibliography. Books on osteology, myology, morphology and locomotion for artists. Treatises accompanying écorchés and theoretical essays. Manuals on proportions, expression and portrait drawing. The general goal of the work was to Iist every published book on the depiction of the human figure in art according to its didactical structure, and thus to write a history of the evolution of a literary genre. In this way, it was possible to expose the main lines of its evolution and create a useful and functional reference text. Using complex didactical methods to teach the drawing of the human figure became outdated a few generations ago and students and teachers alike, wanting advice on figure drawing, are completely dependent on books on artistic anatomy. In some cases these textbooks have remained theonly means to pass down this sortof knowledge. The problem which emerges in autodidactical learning is that a large portion of literature becomes redundant for various reasons; either the techniques are not practical for contemporary drawing courses or the techniques are no longer of benefit at all. Hence, the main idea is to create a reference book which would enable both lecturers and students to find out about the didactical structure and content of specific teaching manuals.
