Neu im AngebotJerusalem in Transition - Decisive Moments in the Creation of Jerusalem in Reality and as a Myth
Edited by Oded Lipschits, Sara Milstein, Konrad Schmid, and Jakob Wöhrle.Jerusalem is usually seen as important and holy, a symbol of a sacred place. But was it always so? Can research reveal fluctuations in the city's status? Can we identify the moment Jerusalem became a political and religious center? Can we differentiate between moments when it really was grand and moments when the grandeur of the city was only idealized? Seven Essays shed light on these questions. - From the Editorial Introduction: "Jerusalem is not only a multi-layered city, inhabited for more than 4000 years almost continuously, it is also a symbol of a sacred place, central to the development of monotheistic religions and to the identity of different nations, deeply rooted in both the Old and New Testament. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that scholars study the city's past with a notion of its holiness and centrality in mind, as if Jerusalem was always important and holy. But was it always so? Can a frank and critical research into Jerusalem's past reveal fluctuations in the city's status? And if so, can we identify the first moment Jerusalem became a political and religious center, radiating its power well beyond its walls? Assuming that the notion of Jerusalem's "glorious past" was used in the legitimization of political order, for example during the Hasmonean period, can we differentiate between moments in the city's past when it really was grand and moments when the grandeur of the city was only idealized? Answering these questions is essential for crafting a better understanding of Jerusalem's political role in each period. Even more importantly, it will allow us to discuss what powers shaped Jerusalem into a prominent place. A view into the longue durée of Jerusalem's past is an opportunity to identify reoccurring processes and forces that shaped the city's dramatic history". - Contents: Nitsan Shalom/Yuval Gadot: Jerusalem in Transition - Decisive Moments in the Creation of Jerusalem in Reality and as a Myth.
