Neu im AngebotBorders and Space in the Book of Joshua
Edited by Oded Lipschits, Sara Milstein, Konrad Schmid, and Jakob Wöhrle.Taken together, the five papers collected in this volume make it clear that issues of borders, space, and land in general serve to determine larger questions of authorial intent in, and literary history of, the book of Joshua. From the Editorial Introduction: »Approaching issues of borders and space, the present volume joins a growing body of literature. In the humanities and social sciences, the "spatial turn" in the last quarter of the twentieth century has stimulated a decided focus on space as an analytical category, especially on “space as experienced and produced at human and societal scale." While in an interdisciplinary perspective, there have been interim results and handbooks available for quite some time now, more recently approaches to issues of space have gained currency in biblical studies as well. Relevant contributions are quite heterogeneous as regards their methodology and interests. This, however, seems only natural, as the study of space is a general outlook and horizon rather than an actual research question, encompassing as it does a great variety of research questions. This is particularly true in the book of Joshua, where problems of borders and space are key, in one way or another, to a whole range of questions. In view of the main themes of the book as outlined above, the conquest and allotment of the “promised land,” this observation comes as no surprise. It is, however, not restricted to a synchronic account of the narrative thrust. Relevant issues are rather diverse, also stemming from the realms of historical and especially historico-topographical studies, literary criticism and redaction history, and comparative approaches engaging pertinent parallels from the Pentateuch, among others. The five papers included in this volume well represent the variety of issues relating to borders and space in the book of Joshua, in both its parts. Some papers reconsider and offer new outlooks on long-standing questions in the history of the research of the book, such as the historico-topographical analysis of specific border descriptions (Gass), or the connection of geographical texts to issues of literary sources of the book of Joshua and its redaction (Krause and Kislev). Others look at geographical issues in the first part of the book in order to shed light on the ideology of the conquest account (Wazana), or to determine the authorship and provenance of a historiographical unit based on its spatial details (Dolgopolsky-Geva).
