Women's Writing and the American Immigrant Experience from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Paul traces a surge of societal and aesthetic impulses to the genre of immigrant literature and highlights a variety of literary strategies converging towards discussions of the complex relationship between location, gender, and identity. - This study traces the aesthetic and social re-emergence of American immigrant literature in the writings of women in the second half of the 20th century. At a crossroads of American studies, postcolonial studies, and feminist/gender studies, it analyzes texts by Paule Marshall, Sandra Cisneros, Vivian Gornick, Bharati Mukherjee, Monica Sone, Michelle Cliff, Jeannette Lander, Jamaica Kincaid, Yoshiko Uchida, and others. The female literary immigrant experience unfolds as a critical interpellation with regard to cultural theories on (metaphors of) mobility, movement, and migration, while, on the other hand, generating new, situated forms of identity, identities changing and 'taking' place.
