Southey wird der "Seeschule" um Wordsworth und Coleridge zugerechnet; mit letzterem gemeinsam verfasste er 1794 das Drama "The Fall of Robespierre". In seiner Jugend rebellisch und radikal (Anhänger der Französischen Revolution), wandelte er sich zum eher konservativen Dichter und wurde 1813 zum Hofdichter des englischen Königshauses ernannt.
