Hunter, Fraser: The carnyx in Iron Age Europe: the Deskford carnyx in its European context

Die umfassende Untersuchung zum Blasinstrument Carnyx, einem der berühmtesten Artefakte der Eisenzeit Schottlands, und zu seiner Symbolik (sowohl auf Seiten der Eroberer als auch auf Seiten der "Barbaren") wird ergänzt durch eine sorgfältige Katalogisierung und Analyse nicht nur der Carnyx-Fragmente, sondern auch ihrer Darstellungen: der Ikonographie auf Münzen, Skulpturen und anderen Artefakten. Auf beiden Seiten wurde der Carnyx zu einer Ikone: Er wurde von den Einheimischen als Symbol für Tapferkeit und Wildheit eingesetzt und von ihren Eroberern für erbeutete Trophäen in den Auseinandersetzungen mit den "Barbaren". Die interdisziplinäre Studie berücksichtigt u.a. die Bereiche der materiellen Kultur, Numismatik, Kunstgeschichte, Museologie und experimentellen Archäologie. The carnyx is studied in the context of musical instruments, metalworking technology, Celtic art styles, hoards and sacrificial offerings, Iron Age connections across Europe, and how the Greeks and Romans used material culture to depict barbarians in triumphal art. Research shifts from details of a single carnyx to a European scale in order to obtain a rounded picture of this striking instrument. Often called Celtic, the carnyx was far more than this. This study questions how useful such broad terms are, and shows the instrument’s spread to other cultural groupings - German, Dacian, and as far away as India.
