American Automobile Names

Given the ubiquitous influence of both automobiles and brand names, the intention of the author is to bring these two aspects together in a linguistic study of American automobile names where the economic, legal and linguistic aspects of trades names and the role of the automobile in American society and culture are explored. The study is based on a corpus of more than 2000 automobile names and gives a detailed account of their morphological and syntactic structure. Semantic aspects of the names such as metaphor, metonymy and iconicity are discussed. Furthermore, the study provides an account of variation in the use of automobile names, both across time and various manufacturers.
