Four essays, originated in the context of the Oscar Wilde conference 2000 in Dresden, address the relationship between law and literature in the 19th and 20th century with focus on Oscar Wilde. Uwe Böker offers an introduction by way of exploring the concept of institutionalisation. Kirby Farrell links the Wilde trials and the moral panic that occurred at the end of the 19th century with Victorian preoccupations with psychic injury and trauma. Ronald C. Griffin looks at the historical material relating to the Wilde trials and their cultural contexts. Finally, Anna-Christina Giovanopoulos investigates censorship as a means for government intrusion into the privacy of the individual sphere.
