Early Sessions of the Synod of Dordt

Edited by Donald Sinnema, Christian Moser, and Herman J. Selderhuis in Collaboration with Johanna Roelevink (States General documents), Dagmar Bronner and Janika Bischof (Editorial Assistants) et al. The Synod of Dordt (1618-1619) was convened primarily to settle the Arminian controversy, centered mainly on predestination and related points, but also addressed other disciplines and made decisions on a variety of other ecclesiastical matters. In a context where church and state were in an entangled relationship, the synod was convened by the Dutch government, the States General. This volume of the critical edition of all the synodal documents contains documents relating to the early sessions of the Synod of Dordt, until the expulsion of the Remonstrants. The documents are provided in original Latin with english summaries. Many are published here for the first time. Included are documents of the Pro-Acta sessions on several matters of Dutch church life - a new Dutch Bible translation, catechetical instruction, baptism of slave children, theological training and printing abuses - as well as documents concerning the contentious procedural debates with the Remonstrants on how to deal with the doctrinal issues in the controversy - their view of predestination and related points.
