Prosopography of Ptolemaic Cyprus

The purpose and scope of this book is to assemble together every person connected with Ptolemaic Cyprus whether a native of the island or a foreigner, whether important or humble, who lived and worked in Cyprus or abroad during the period concerned (295/4-58 B.C., 48/7-30 B.C. ). Of the Ptolemies it shall refer only to those who resided or worked in Cyprus. The Ptolemaic inscriptions of Cyprus constitute the main source of the Prosopography of Ptolemaic Cyprus for they are more eloquent for the history of the island in this period than the literary sources and the papyri. The epigraphic material from which this book derived its information, poor in quality, though not in quantity, consists of few inscriptions of historical importance, which throw light mainly on the administration of the island by the Ptolemies and on local selfadministration. The greatest percentage are simple dedicatory, honorific and funerary documents.
