The book provides not only one of the most sustained attempts in contemporary epistemology to take global scepticism seriously, but does so by offering a fascinating and spirited defence of the view based upon what Grant refers to as a "truly mind-boggling but almost universally neglected" argument of Hume's in the "Treatise". This argument boils down to the observation that scepticism with regard to reason can't be legitimately argued against, while dogmatism about reason can't be legitimately argued for. Grant's focus centres round this argument of Hume's and the challenge it represents. The various discussions of the anti-sceptical positions and the strategies they employ are focused through the lens of this challenge.
