The history of the use of the Fathers in the sixteenth century is a very complicated story whose twists of plot and character manage to astonish us. What made the sixteenth century a tragedy for many Christians who thought the confusion and disorder of the Great Schism could not be surpassed and who watched in dumb astonishment as the unquestioned verities of their youth were savagely attacked by other Christians makes it a fascinating period for historians. The 12 essays (eight in English; four in German) in this volume were written for an international colloquium on the use of the Fathers in sixteenth-century biblical exegesis that was held in March, 1994, at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The colloquium tried to unravel a few of the strands in this complex narrative and made a good, if modest, beginning. It is the hope of all the participants in the colloquium that the essays in this book will stimulate other historians and theologians to join them in their common inquiry. - Contents: David C.
