From 1945 until his retirement in 1981, he was Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. Throughout his teaching career, he endeavored to promote international relations by teaching American students the language and culture of Portugal. He also served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and as Chairman of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.
