This volume collects the contributions to a two-part joint conference held by the Universities of Birmingham and Mannheim. Its goal was to investigate the political economy of industrial policy through study evidence from each country. Together, the ten contributions suggest that the positive short-term effects of economic recovery policies in Britain and Germany in the 1930s need to be considered alongside the likely costs imposed on longer-term economic performance, especially when comparing the respective success of each country's policy measures.
